If you live in Austin you already know, and if you’re new to the area, you’ll find out soon enough: the Austin music scene is legendary for a reason. It’s the place where artists like Janis Joplin, Iron and Wine, Spoon, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and the Dixie Chicks started, and so many more incredible musicians have passed through. It would be a shame not to take advantage of it. Here is a list of some of Austin’s best live music venues to get you started.

The Broken Spoke

It is Texas, right? Let’s kick things off with a good, old-fashioned honky-tonk. The Broken Spoke has been on the scene since 1964 and is still run by its original owner. In the last 50+ years, it’s hosted some of country music’s biggest icons. You can even stop in for some line dance lessons and chicken fried steak. Check out the event calendar here.

Mohawk

Built as an indoor/outdoor multi-level performance space, Mohawk’s band list is as eclectic as its design. In fact, they aim to host musicians that represent all walks of life, perfect for a someone that’s looking to find something different. Mohawk often features up-and-coming musicians from all around the world, take a look at their event calendar to see what’s coming next.

The Elephant Room

If jazz is more your pace, take the steps down to The Elephant Room. It’s just the way jazz should be: intimate, soulful and easy to listen to. The venue features live music acts every night, and word has it that weeknight performances are often free. See a list of events here.

Antone’s Nightclub

Since 1975, Antone’s has been the blues capital of Austin, hosting all the local blues kings and queens as well as frequent visits from renowned musicians. You can find live music there on most nights of the week. Visit their events page for a list of upcoming shows.

Beerland

If you’re looking for the underground scene–whether it’s hip hop, punk, or metal–you’ve found it. Beerland hosts live shows from locals as well as touring acts most nights of the week. It’s loud and unpretentious, the way the garage scene should be. Check out upcoming acts here.

Stubb’s BBQ

Since 1968, Stubb’s BBQ has turned from a Lubbock, Texas bar-b-que shop into one of Austin’s most well-known music venues. The modern incarnation of Stubb’s features a large open-air theater for national touring acts and an intimate indoor stage for locals. You can even go to their gospel brunch every Sunday.
