The weekend getaway. It’s not so long that you have to pack for days but not too short either. It’s the perfect break between work weeks to get you reinvigorated. And what we love about Austin is that it’s full of weekend getaway destinations, with plenty to see, do, eat, drink, adventure, and relax. Here are a few suggestions to get you started.

Lake Travis

Just a short drive from Griffis Canyon Creek, Lake Travis has plenty to do whether you want to be pampered or head out for a party. If you’re looking for luxury, stay at the Lakeway Resort and Spa where you can play golf, hit the lake, or just relax. If you’re looking for something more low key, check out one of the many B&Bs like Casa del Sol. And while you’re at Lake Travis, get some food and drink, or catch a show at The Oasis, one of the best live music venues in the area.

Fredericksburg

About a 1.5 hours west of Austin, the town of Fredericksburg has its own charm and a laid-back small-town vibe. For starters, the area has over 40 wineries and tasting rooms—even several wine tour companies and shuttles. Or you can head over to Enchanted Rock State Natural Area for a hike and a picnic. Go to Absolute Charm for a list of vacation rentals and B&Bs. For a more unique lodging experience, look into the Hangar Hotel, which is designed to look like a WWII airplane hangar.

New Braunfels

South on I-35 between Austin and San Antonio sits the German-settled town of New Braunfels. Especially during the summer, New Braunfels offers fun outdoor activities like tubing and swimming, and a nice craft beer scene. While you’re there, do some glamping in a luxury teepee.

Austin

Yeah, a staycation! Settle into a nice hotel and explore your town from a different point of view. The creative, luxury Heywood Hotel has glowing reviews from the national press and is only a few miles from Griffis SoCo. You can also try the classically styled Hotel Ella inside one of Austin’s original landmark estates. Or, for a more unique experience, stay at Lone Star Court—a contemporary motel with a retro motor lodge vibe, complete with live music and bar.

Give yourself a break in 2020, and try one of these fun destinations close to (or in) Austin.
