Happiness is a wet nose and a wagging tail greeting you when you walk in the door. That’s a fact of life if you talk to a dog lover. Our little four-legged pals are family–they deserve a spot on the bed and maybe even a spot at the table. When it comes to choosing a living space, why not choose somewhere that’s right for you and for your pet? We’re not just talking about an apartment that allows pets, we’re talking about one that welcomes them.

Why choose a place that caters to pet owners and their fur babies? For starters, you don’t want to sneak a pet into a property that doesn’t welcome them. You risk having to give up the pet and/or move. Beyond that, your pets need a safe, enriching life, and a property with dedicated pet amenities can give you the peace of mind that you’re giving them just that.

Modern apartment communities are offering expanded pet policies and more and more amenities for pet lovers. You can find communities that offer everything from nearby hiking trails to city dog parks, to on-site, off-leash dog parks for added convenience when your dog needs to get some energy out.

If you’re an apartment dweller who’s ready for a new barking member of the family, some breeds are better than others. Here’s a quick list of dog breeds that are perfectly suited for living in an apartment. For more information, visit the American Kennel Club.

1. Bulldog – These thick-set bruisers are kind and friendly and great with kids. Bulldogs max out at about 50 pounds but excel at cuddling and being lazy, so smaller spaces work just fine. They do enjoy brisk walks, but they aren’t high energy and like being close to their humans.

2. King Charles Spaniel – Beautiful and graceful, the King Charles Spaniel can really class the place up. This breed is small, averaging about 15 pounds, but it’s equally at home with an active owner or a couch potato. And that face? Irresistible.

3. Maltese – Maltese fall in the toy category and they’re adaptable, which makes them perfect for apartment life. They’re small but fearless; great watchdogs. The bonus is that they don’t shed.

4. Yorkshire Terrier – Feisty, big-personality Yorkies are favorites for families that live in urban areas and especially in smaller spaces. They’re big on personality but won’t take up too much room. Even better, they’re hypoallergenic, so you won’t get sniffly when you cuddle.

5. Greyhound – Surprising, right? Who’d think these sprinters would function so well in apartment homes. The truth is greyhounds love to lounge around after they get their exercise in.

6. Pug – Pugs are homebodies by nature, though they can be a little mischievous. A little personality never hurt anyone. They’re at home anywhere, whether it’s city or country, kids or not, alone or with other dogs.
