With all due respect to dinner and a movie, sometimes date nights need the road less traveled. After all, a little variety in your routine can be a great way to shake things up. Plus it’s nice to have a date where you can get around town together and not just stare at a big screen. Not sure where to begin? We’ve got you covered with a few fun date night ideas near Portland’s South Waterfront area.

Portland Night Market

Six times per year, the Portland Night Market opens its doors with “175+ of Portland’s best vendors celebrating local food, culture, music, drinks, and retail.” It’s a chance to experience everything that makes Portland unique, and even better, it’s free to get in. From there you can shop for some of Portland’s finest handmade goods, try on local apparel, taste test at the food trucks, or have a few drinks and listen to music. Check out the event dates and details.

Funhouse Lounge

An “arts-centric lounge,” the Funhouse Lounge in Portland’s central eastside is full of surprises. There are drinks, of course, that you can partake in while watching anything from improv and stand-up to bingo, circus acts, musicals, and more. You won’t find a better time or a more unique experience anywhere in Portland. Not convinced? Then how about this: they have a clown room, too. See a schedule of events here

Glowing Greens

If psychedelic black lights mixed with a little healthy competition is more your speed for date night, check out Glowing Greens—an indoor, 3D adventure mini golf course in downtown Portland. It features 13 holes that you can play throughout the day, with tee offs as late as 11 pm on weekends. And if you want to make a whole night of it, Glowing Greens has axe throwing and escape rooms in the same building. Find out more here.

DIY Bar

We’ve all heard of paint and sip. But have you heard of macramé and drink away? Leathercraft and liquor? Sew and swig? You will after you visit DIY Bar—a crafter’s paradise with some drinking mixed in. They offer projects that will satisfy any DIY hankering from wall hangings to wallets to leather-covered flasks. Check out their projects.
